Union Human Resource Development Minister Shri Prakash Javedkar unveiled a supercomputing facility, named “Param-Ishan” at IIT Guwahati on 19th September 2016.The high-performance “Param-Ishan” has the computing speed of 250 teraflops and capacity of 300 terabytes(TB). The 250 teraflops mean that the computer is capable of performing 250 trillion operations per second. This supercomputer was installed in the partnership with the Centre for Development of Advanced Computing(C-DAC) and IIT- Guwahati. After the launch of Param-Ishan, Mr.Prakash Javedkar said, “ It is one of the glad moments to have fastest and most powerful computer in North Eastern, eastern and southern region. The IITs are modern temples for development and we reiterated our commitment to have a big push to research and innovation by empowering the educational institutions to transform into a higher seat of learning and platforms for advanced research”. He also expressed that, C-DAC and IIT Guwahati is a strategic move that will provide a boost to both the HPC users and the community through the deployed PARAM-ISHAN and several technology areas will be positively affected by the introduction of the new supercomputer.
“The government”, he said, “has also invited for new developmental and research initiatives and two thousand proposals were received. Out of these projects, four hundred were shortlisted and funds released for the various projects across the country”.A nation’s potential for growth is evaluated on the quality of education and development. Though Indian premium institutions are popular across the globe, they fail to match the standards of other universities and hence, there is a need to bring research and innovation for the students. Textual knowledge is not enough for an institute in overall growth, focusing should be on skill development. This is the reason behind designing this supercomputing facility in order to engrave creativity by adding another new example for ‘Digital India’.
Param-Ishan can be used in several scientific and engineering application areas, including weather , climate weather modeling and seismic data processing. This would be helpful as EastIndia receives heavy rainfall during monsoon leading to floods and landslides. This supercomputer has multiple uses and potential applications in computational chemistry,computational fluid Dynamics, computational Electromagnetics, Civil engineering structures, Nana block self-assemble,optimization etc. Indeed, the computer justifies its name supercomputer ‘Param-Ishan’.
Prof.Gautam Biswas, Director of IIT Guwahati said, “PARAM-ISHAN have an amazing power of 250 Teraflops and 350 Terabytes capacity and this will not only augment the research initiatives in the institute but also helps in creating an ecosystem for attracting right talents to the field of research”. It is being anticipated by some senior officials that the educational institutions across the country will be equipped with supercomputers very soon to boost up the creativity and research since the government is focusing on providing advanced infrastructure. A reference was made of the make in India and Digital India program and the decision to invite investors to India and encourage them to invest.
