Anand Shah, the founder of Indian firm Sarvajal is the company which had developed solar-powered ‘water ATMs’ to get clean and affordable water to people in remote parts of India. Anand Shah said he has a long vision to have a water vending machine in every village and on every city corner, as a simple solution to a lack of drinking water in the developing world.

Hyderabad got its first water ATM, inaugurated by Mayor, B.Rammohan with the support of GHMC and Metro Water Supply which will provide clean and mineral rich water to the public, especially to those who cannot access it. This Water Atm is Located at NTR Garden and costs ₹1 (glass), ₹2 (a litre), ₹5 (10 litres) and ₹10 (20 litres). Telangana Govt. , Mayor, B.Rammohan and Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation GHMC in collaboration with Metro Water supply are planning to launch 200 Water ATMs in Hyderabad by the year end. The water supplied in Water atm will be 100% pure devoid of any sludge formation, and no chemicals are used in the process.

Clean drinking water helps in controlling about 90% of health problems. The government, therefore, is making efforts to provide clean drinking water to the villagers. Water ATMs are being installed as a step towards the goal. Hyderabad is the fourth metro city to launch water atm after Bengaluru, Delhi and Mumbai. Many other cities in India have mobile Water Atm.


The GHMC was also planning to approach women self-help groups to promote the project in its first phase. The GHMC Commissioner, B. Janardhan Reddy told the publication that this concept will be introduced with a major focus on the poor areas of the city.These water ATMs are slowly making their presence felt across the country. Other cities that have them include Nagpur, Bengaluru, Delhi and Gurgaon.
