New Delhi: Rise of women figure in top 20 list of Common Admission Test (CAT) set a record for the admission test conducted by the Indian Institutes of Management (IIM) for admission to postgraduate courses.
The exam is given by the two lakh candidates, highest since 4 years administered by IIM Lucknow. This time for the first time ever women took the two positions in top 20 list.
“There have been instances of one girl student among the top 20 rankers but never two,” said the former CAT convener and IIM Indore professor Rohit Kapoor.

Among them were three candidates with non-engineering backgrounds.

In 2016, the top 20 had no women and none from disciplines outside engineering.
Number of candidates taking the exam has been gradually increasing since 2014 where 1.68 lakh candidates attempted, 1.8 lakh in 2015, 1.95 in 2016 and rapid assay in 2017 i.e 2.31 lakh. In the earlier winter parliament session an IIM Bill was introduced where 20 IIMs will now offer the MBA (Master of Business Administration) courses courses instead of diploma courses called the Postgraduate Programme (PGP). Some 4,500 seats will be up for grabs.
On the basis of the CAT scores, the IIMs will call students for group discussions and interviews. Each IIM has its own admission policy and conducts its own counselling.
